The Future of Social Security. Social security’s current financial position – how we got here and what might its future be?

Dr. Peter Diamond, Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2010, first advised Congress on Social Security in 1974 and has followed developments ever since. He will discuss the history of social security and the problems it currently faces. He will also discuss the politics of social security and possible solutions, including ideas being followed in some other countries. Finally, he will share some other gems from his life in the Q&A with USF’s Professor Ludwig Chincarini.

Peter Diamond is an Institute Professor Emeritus at MIT, where he taught from 1966 to 2011. He first consulted to Congress about Social Security reform in 1974 and has served on two Technical Panels. He has analyzed pension systems in many countries. His books include Saving Social Security: A Balanced Approach (with Peter Orszag), Reforming Pensions: Principles and Policy Choices and Pension Reform: A Short Guide (both with Nicholas Barr). He has been President of the American Economic Association, of the Econometric Society, and of the National Academy of Social Insurance. He was one of the three winners of the 2010 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for analysis of markets with search frictions.
